VECELLIO, Cesare (ca. 1530-1600). Degli habiti antichi, et moderni di diverse parti del mondo libri due. Venice: Damiano Zenaro, 1590. 8° (175 x 113mm). Elaborate woodcut title-border, half-page circular woodcut on verso of c8, 420 full-page woodcut illustrations of costume, each within a decorative woodcut border. (3 small holes in title, light worming to leaves Y8 - Dd5, with occasional slight loss to illustrations.) Later speckled sheep, spine gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC WORK. The first costume book to comment on contemporary manners and dress. It is divided into two books, the first contains 361 illustrations of European (including Russian and Balkan) and Turkish costume. There is an emphasis on Venetian costume and the illustrations include several views of Venice and Venetian life. The second book illustrates 59 examples of Asian and African dress, but also includes China and the Canary Islands. Colas 2976; Lipperheide Aa 33; Vinet 2093.
