Beschreibung:

Venetian Glass Micromosaic Mirror Late 19th/early 20th century The beveled oval mirror plate within a rectangular frame, the cresting depicting the Lion of St. Mark, the apron with a view of the Doge's Barge, the sides with allegorical figures of Summer and Autumn, the corners encrusted with polychrome flowers applied in relief on a gold ground.Height 43 inches (109.3 cm), width 35 1/4 inches (89.5 cm). Interested in saving the distressed mosaics of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, a lawyer from Vicenza, Antonio Salviati founded a firm in 1859 that developed a process for the production of mosaics. In doing so, he saved the declining fortunes of the 19th century Venetian glass-making trade, resuscitating and energizing the industry, a trend that continues to this day. This large micromosaic mirror was made in the late 19th/early 20th century and exhibits the feats of those new processes. The cresting depicts a panel with the lion emblematic of St. Mark holding an open book with the motto of Venice: PAX / TIBI / MAR / CE / EVAN / GE / LISTA / MEUS. The apron displays the Doge's Barge, the side panels depicting figures emblematic of Summer and Autumn. C Estate of Marianne Schaller
Overall good restored condition, minor losses and replacements to tesserae, i.e., area to left of figure of Spring's flowing robe, above lion's head, small areas surrounding barge and along bottom edge, later gilding to outer metal frame, trim around mirror probably black-painted tole, outside frame appears to be brass, both appear to be original; lacking one metal flowerhead roundel to left lower corner of inner frame.
