A flourish of enthusiasm about the reception and takings of a gala performance: 'Serata magnifica. Entusiasmo. Spiacemi tu non fossi presente. Incasso splendido. Arrivero alle sei'. The 'Serata' in question was a performance of the 'Prayer' from Rossini's Mos at La Scala, which Verdi had conducted for the Rossini Commemoration. The telegram is addressed to his wife at the Palazzo Doria in Genoa, where the Verdis had been staying over the previous winter, and where she was still suffering from the 'flu which had afflicted them both in the preceding months, and had seriously slowed the composition of Verdi's last opera, Falstaff .
