VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Four autograph letters signed to Giuseppina Appiani, Venice, 28 February 1844 and 25 January 1846, Rome, 3 October 1844 and Bologna, 21 March 1847, referring to rehearsals in Venice for his new opera Ernani , the delay in the first performance of Attila , the departure of Donizetti from Rome for a month in Naples, and promising to give Appiani a verbal report of the reception of Macbeth , 4 pages, octavo, with integral address leaves, (some minor foxing and creasing) In the late 1830's and 1840's Giuseppina Appiani had a salon in Milan where she entertained the literary and musical celebrities of the day. She was a patroness of Donizetti and then, in the early 1840's, of Verdi. A few years later the latter became increasingly friendly with a rival patroness Clarina Maffei. Verdi finally broke with Appiani in 1854, for reasons which are not entirely clear but concerning his relationship with Giuseppina Strepponi. Both Ernani and Attila were first performed at the Teatro La Fenice on 9 March 1844 and 17 March 1846. Macbeth was first given on 14 March 1847 at Teatro della Pergola in Florence. Letters to Appiani are rare and these four are apparently unpublished. (4)
