Half title, engraved portrait frontispiece, 7 engraved portraits and 5 line-block plates. (Occasional light spotting, some offsetting caused by loosely-inserted newspaper clippings.) Original green roan gilt, upper cover with gilt design of tree, lower cover with gilt thistle motif, gilt edges. Provenance : Carlos I, King of Portugal (1863-1908, presentation inscription on fly leaf 'Pour , Mon cher neveu Carlos , de la part , de sa devouée , Tante , Victoria R.I. , Balmoral , 10 Nov: 1895'; monogram inkstamp on title). Fifth edition. INSCRIBED BY VICTORIA TO CARLOS I KING OF PORTUGAL Victoria's mother Victoire, Duchess of Kent was the sister of the father of Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who married Queen Maria II of Portugal, and was the grandfather of Carlos I.
