NASA A pair of photographs: 1) Thomas Stafford pats the nose of a stuffed Snoopy, also nickname of the Lunar Module, after suiting up for the scheduled launch of Apollo 10 2) John Young holds up a drawing of cartoon character Charlie Brown, also the nickname of the Command Module. An image from a live colour broadcast from space 18-26 May 1968 Two wirephotos, vintage gelatin silver prints on fibre-base paper, approx. 21 x 15 cm (8 x 6 in), with Associated Press captions in margins Footnotes: Charles Schulz's involvement with NASA began in 1968 when he was approached by NASA with a request to use Snoopy as their safety mascot. The Silver Snoopy Award program was instituted to improve the safety record of NASA employees and contractors. Snoopy and Charlie Brown became Apollo 10's call signs. Schulz also drew mission-related artwork for NASA.
