VITRUVIUS Pollio, Marcus. Gli oscuri et dificili passi dell'opera Ionica. Translated by G.B. Bertani. Mantua: Venturino Ruffinelli, 1558. 2° (380 x 250mm). Title in elaborate architectural woodcut surround. 20 woodcut illustrations, including repetitions, some full-page. (Lacking blank A1, title torn and repaired at inner margin, other leaves strengthened at inner margins.) Later vellum, spine gilt. FIRST EDITION of Bertani's commentary on selected passages from Vitruvius. 'On leaf E5r he mentions the engraver Giorgio Ghisi as his companion in research at Rome.' (Mortimer). Some copies include an engraved 'frontispiece' of Hercules and the defeated Hydra by Ghisi after Bertani. It is not always present and does not appear to be required. Brunet V, 1330; cf.
