Half-title, titles in red and black with woodcut devices, 2 copper-engraved plates on one folding sheet, 2 wood-engraved plates, geometrical diagrams, errata leaf, printed correction slip pasted onto single line of text at O4. (Small worm-track in top margin to half-title, title and first few leaves, repaired in some instances, not into text, a little marginal worming from R2 in part 2 through to end significantly extending into text in last two leaves, minor dampstain to lower margin affecting part 1 and beginning of part 2, occasional light spotting and browning.) FIRST EDITION of this attempt at a reconstruction of the fifth book of Apollonius of Perga's Conics . Of the eight books of the Conics only the first four were known in Latin until the mid-17th century. An Arabic manuscript of three of the missing four books came to light while Viviani was working on his reconstruction; this was published by Borelli two years later (see lot 239). The consonance between Viviani's reconstruction and Borelli's edition provoked great admiration. Brunet V 1335; Cinti 266 (135); De Caro 125; DSB xiv 48-50; Honeyman VII 3061; Riccardi II 625 ('Raro e pregiato').
