VYSE, Richard William Howard Operations carried on at the Pyramids of Gizeh in 1837: with an account of a voyage into Upper Egypt , London: James Fraser 1840 and 1842. 3 volumes including appendix, 4° (272 x 177mm.). Lithographed plates, plans and illustrations. (Occasional light spotting and offsetting). Volumes one and II contemporary brown morocco gilt with gilt edges, appendix volume later cloth. (A little rubbed with scuff marks). FIRST AND APPARENTLY ONLY EDITION. Vyse visited Egypt in 1835 and became interested in the excavations at Gizeh being carried out by Cavigilia. He began to take part in the work, though at an early stage he disassociated himself from Caviglia. He returned to England in 1837 but made arrangements for the excavations to continue under the direction of John Perring. "His researches and those of Perring were of great importance in elucidating the early history of Egypt" (DNB). (Blackmer 1754). (3)
