WADSTRÖM, Carl Bernhard (1746-1799). An Essay on Colonization, particularly applied to the Western Coast of Africa, with some thoughts on cultivation and commerce; also brief descriptions of the colonies already formed, or attemped, in Africa, including those of Sierra Leona and Bulama , London: for the author by Darton and Harvey, and sold by G. Nicol, W. Faden [and others], 1794-95. 2 parts, 4° (261 x 215mm). Half title in part I, each part with separate title, 5 engraved plates and plans and one large folding map, with final 12 leaves of list of contents, list of subscribers and errata and directions to the binder leaf. (Half title, title and first few leaves waterstained, offsetting onto plates, lightly and evenly browned throughout, some mainly light spotting.) Modern calf-backed boards. Provenance : Pennsylvania Colonization Society (presentation inscription on half title by S. Colwell, dated 19 July 1856 and library stamps on both titles) -- Explorers Club, James B. Ford Library, New York (blind-stamped library stamps on title, plates and a few margins of text).
