WAGNER, RICHARD. Autograph letter signed ("Richard Wagner"), in French, to Monsieur Schäffer, requesting the exact name for an inscription on a score of Tannhauser and the use of a piano. Paris, 26 September 1858. 3 pages, 8vo, on rectos and verso of folded sheet; matted and framed (double-glazed) with cabinet portrait showing the composer in profile. Translates in part: "...I forgot to ask you yesterday to give me the exact name of Madame Enard, for the dedication [i.e. inscription], on my score of Tannhauser. Could you kindly send them... I am planning to come see you today or tomorrow to ask you whether you could possibly rent me for one or 2 weeks (that is, until I get back my piano) any one of your instruments that is available and that you could most easily lend me for these few days. I would be infinitely obliged to you, if you would have one place in my little temporary salon..." At the end Wagner asks Schäffer to excuse his "terrible français."
