WALPOLE, Horace (1717-97, 4th earl of Orford). A Catalogue of the Royal and Noble Authors of England, with lists of their works . London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley; and J. Graham 1759. 8 o (195 x 117 mm), 2 volumes. Interleaved. Contemporary blue half roan, uncut, (binding rubbed). Provenance : the author (extensively annotated for a new edition) -- Thomas Kirgate (1734-1810), Walpole's printer, inscribed by him on a blank at the beginning of vol. 2: "These two Vols. were given to me by my Master Mr. Walpole, July, 1785. T Kirkgate" -- Richard Bull (1725-1806), Walpole's friend and collector of Strawberry Hill imprints, inscribed by him at the beginning of vol. 1:"N.B. This was Lord Orford's own copy, and all the M.S. notes, of his own hand writing. Rd. Bull" -- Lord Margadale of Islay (sale Christie's, St. James's, 24 November 1971, lot 254). Corrected second edition of Walpole's or original bibliography, enlarged by 17 noble authors. The first edition had been published the previous year at the Strawberry Hill Press. Walpole had sold the copyright to the Dodsleys and Graham for two years. HORACE WALPOLE'S OWN COPY, prepared by him for a definitive edition, WITH NUMEROUS AND AND EXTENSIVE AUTOGRAPH ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS and some cancellations. Two identical autograph notes are pasted into vol. 1: "This copy is corrected and enlarged as I intend it should be printed for the last time. HorWalpole." The 26 added authors (7 nobles, 6 minor writers, 2 peeresses, 6 Scots, 5 Irish) and much of this manuscript material were included in the first volume (c. 1771) of the abortive Strawberry Hill Press edition of Walpole's collected works in quarto (of which only a few copies are known), and Walpole manuscript notes in the indexes of both these volumes refer to the page-numbers of that quarto edition. Walpole continued to add new material, however, but never saw his definitive edition realized. For the planned new edition Walpole added to the title of vol. 2: "The Third Edition [crossed out], enlarged with many new articles, with several passages restored from the original MS, and with many other additions." The autograph corrections and additions occur in the margins of about 175 pages of the printed text of this second edition, and on about 135 pages of the blank interleaves, many of them very substantial. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
