WALTER PARRY HASKETT SMITH (1859-1946)
WALTER PARRY HASKETT SMITH (1859-1946)
WALTER PARRY HASKETT SMITH (1859-1946) Climbing in the British Isles. I.-- England [and II.--Wales and Ireland ]. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1894[-95]. 2 vols, 8° (152 x 112mm). Illustrations and plans throughout. Original red pictorial cloth, upper sides blocked in gilt and black, spine gilt-lettered, vol. I in the original printed dust-jacket (dust-jacket chipped at spine head, a few short tears and light wear at the top edge, vol. II spine lightly faded). FIRST EDITIONS; THE FIRST VOLUME IN THE ORIGINAL DUST-JACKET. Haskett Smith, the leading climber of his day, is often described as the father of English rock climbing. His most famous climb, described here, was his solo first ascent of Napes Needle in 1886 -- an event which marks the foundation of rock-climbing as a sport in its own right and distinct from mountaineering. The section for Ireland was written by H.C. Hart. HERBERT R.C. CARR A Climbers' Guide to Snowdon and the Beddgelert District . London: Burrup, Mathieson & Company, 1926. 8° (150 x 120mm). 21 plates and 3 maps. (A few leaves with shallow creases.) Original dark-blue cloth (spine lightly faded). Band and Evans' signatures in ink on the front free endpaper, dated 1953 and 1955 respectively. Provenance : 'B.T. Ashetton, Pen Yr Gwrydd 1927' (signature; some pencilled climb notes, perhaps also in his hand). FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY EVEREST EXPEDITION MEMBERS GEORGE BAND AND CHARLES EVANS Together with two other first editions in original binding: J.M. Archer Thompson and A.W. Andrews's The Climbs on Lliwedd (London 1909), the first guide issued by the Climbers' Club, from the Library of the Ladies' Alpine Club; and J.M. Archer Thomson's Climbing in the Ogwen District (London 1910). (5)
