There's a nutty ad for an "Electric SPOT REDUCER" (ostensibly a weight-loss gizmo, but let's not be naive — the illustration shows a sexy gal reclining in her undies, legs parted, eyes narrowed, smiling blissfully as she massages her belly with the vibrating device — it's a friggin' sex toy). In between this and other dubious ads, hooligans gleefully slap, beat, shoot, shank and otherwise menace respectable members of society for the reader's vicarious kicks. One begins to see pre-Code comics as a sort of pulp-paper bazaar where every fetish, every questionable tendency is nurtured and exploited as long as there's a dime to be hustled.
