WASHINGTON, George]. HUNTINGTON, Jonathan. Autograph letter signed ("Jno.Huntington") to his son Joshua Huntington, "In Camp at Cambridge" [Mass.]; Norwich, Conn., 24 June 1775. 1 page, folio, written in a bold, ornate hand, integral address leaf with address panel marked "Per Mr. Avery" (John Avery?), small seal hole, neatly silked from blank side, several small holes from acidic ink affecting two flourishes in Huntington's signature. FATHER TO SON, ANNOUNCING WASHINGTON'S APPOINTMENT. An interesting letter of a Connecticut farmer to a son apparently serving with the American militia units in the Boston siege. He informs Joshua that his wife is well after her travels and reports "a good prospect of a fine crop of grain, & a great appearance of Apples & other fruit." Then, although there is little news, "in the Public prints account are just come that Col. Washington of Virginia is appointed by the Continental Congress as General of the Army, now concerned at Boston & Likely [he] will soon be with you and proposes to bring with him one thousand of the best Riflemen that can be collected in Virginia." In a postscript added on 26 June, he cautions his son that the army must "always be in such readiness as that the Enemy doth not take you on Surprise. I expect they will study to attack you if possible when you don't expect it."
