The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder . London: Chapman & Hall, 1960. 8 o. Original blue cloth, gilt-lettered on spine; printed dust jacket (lightly soiled, few chips at edges). Provenance : GRAHAM GREENE (presentation inscription; estate bookplate). Later edition, the first with major revision and change in structure. Green was struck with frequent bouts of illness, due to the poor condition of his lungs. He left England for the Antibes in 1966, following doctors's orders to "avoid London smog." The revisions in this edition were significant, indicated on the jacket copy: "'I have modified the grosser passages but have not obliterated them because they are an essential part of the book.'
