Provenance : GRAHAM GREENE (presentation inscription; estate bookplate). Later edition, the first with major revision and change in structure. A SUPERB LITERARY ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WAUGH TO GRAHAM GREENE on the front free endpaper: "For Graham from Evelyn July 1960 I think it is tidier. It is certainly better printed than the original edition. I am awfully sorry to hear you have been in hospital again. You have greatly elated my delinquent son by your kind letter about his book." Green was struck with frequent bouts of illness, due to the poor condition of his lungs. He left England for the Antibes in 1966, following doctors's orders to "avoid London smog." The revisions in this edition were significant, indicated on the jacket copy: "'I have modified the grosser passages but have not obliterated them because they are an essential part of the book.' Comparison of the two texts will no doubt provide the subject of many a student's thesis..." Among the changes is the description of Charles Ryder's sexual possession of Julia. Davis et al, XIX. (2)
