American (Western Massachusetts), ca 1720-1740. A figured oak two-drawer chest with pine secondary, having pinned and rosehead nail construction, a moulded two board top over two drawers with centered dados on the sides which glide on interior rails, typical of drawer construction in this period. The sides with moulded framing around panels, the top, center rail and the drawer fronts all with moulded inset ebonized and red-painted grooves, the drawer fronts punctuated with ebonized bosses. The bottom rail with decorative shaping; ht. 20, wd. 27, dp. 16.5 in. A scarce survior. Provenance: Descended in the Channing family of Boston, with no other collection history. Condition: Front legs shortened, with maple bun feet additions; bottom rail shaping old, and possibly later, some bosses likely replaced, lower drawer bottom likely replaced. Paint refreshed.
