Title: When God Laughs and Other Stories Author: London, Jack Place: New York Publisher: Macmillan Date: 1911 Description: ix, [1], 319, [1] + [4] ad pp. Illustrated with frontispiece and 5 plates. Olive green cloth decorated in red and light green, lettered in gilt. First Edition. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Dear Carl & Lora, How do you like 'A Piece of Steak'? Please do tell me. Jack London, Glen Ellen, Calif., Feb. 16, 1911." Carlton Bierce was Ambrose Bierce nephew - he and his wife Lora were members of Jack London's circle. In the inscription, London has re-applied he "eak" in Steak - apparently in his haste (or perhaps state of inebriation?) he had made an error the first go around. The book was published in January 1911, deposited on January 26th, making this an early presentation copy. Lot Amendments Condition: A little rubbing to spine ends and corners; hinge cracked before frontispiece, Jack London sticker on back of free endpaper, else very good. Item number: 232363
