WHISTLER, JAMES ABBOTT McNEILL. Two pen-and-ink sketches by Whistler on a quarto sheet (the verso of a letterhead of the Beefsteak Club in London), 255 by 205mm. (10 by 8in.), a trifle soiled, tipped at left edge to a stiffer paper sheet ; the two sketches, facing each other, are nearly the same: both are of three male heads, with the middle head being, undoubtedly, a self-portrait of Whistler. One of the sketches has been captioned and signed by Whistler (with his butterfly signature): "Three in one - and one in three And one of them has died for me!"; Autograph note signed (butterfly signature) to an unnamed recipient, n.d., n.d., 1 page, 16mo, in pencil, mounted on card , mentioning Mrs. Leveson Gower whose portrait he had painted -- PENNELL, E.R. & J. The Whistler Journal, Philadelphia, 1921, square 8vo, original cloth-backed boards, uncut , FIRST EDITION. Provenance (for the first item): Calvin Bullock (sale, Christie's New York, 19 December 1986, lot 250). (3)
