WHITE, T.H. The Once and Future King , London, Collins, 1958, 8°, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, front blank inscribed: "John Arlott with love from Tim White 21.4.58," with 15 line note in White's hand beneath (preliminaries slightly affected by damp), original blue cloth, dust-jacket. The four books comprise The Sword in the Stone , The Queen of Air and Darkness , The Ill Made Knight and The Candle in the Wind . A fifth part, The Book of Merlyn , which White had written for the tetralogy, was not included and remained unpublished until 1977. The note, in White's hand, reads: "The dust jacket says what is new, but the whole emphasis has been shifted a little from being farce to being serious. New chapters in S. in S. [ The Sword in the Stone ] are chapters 13 + 19. Lots of whimsy, like Madame Mim, has gone overboard. I suppose the S. in S. will continue to be obtainable separately for those who prefer it. Now we're off to Burnham and it will be interesting to come back when the reviews are over, to find it has fallen still-born from the press!"
