WHITMAN, Walt (1819-1892). Photograph signed ("Walt Whitman"), n.d. [1880-1890]. 7 3/8 x 4¾ in., slight feathering of ink at and of signature, unobtrusive repairs to corners and a marginal chip . THE "GOOD GRAY POET" IN SEPIA. An appealing sepia-toned collotype photograph of good clarity and detail. The white-bearded poet, in a slouch hat and sweater, sits casually in a rustic chair, his left arm and hand upraised, a small butterfly poised motionless on his outstretched finger. (The trusting butterfly that so aptly symbolizes the poet's lifelong affinity with the natural world, was, in fact, a prop contributed by the photographer). Boldly signed in fountain pen ink in bottom margin. With added caption "The Homer of America" at top and "The Good Gray Poet" at bottom edge.
