His paintings and watercolours are best known for his emphasis on light. Maris' often cited motto was: "I don't paint cows, but rather effects of light." Maris may have used this watercolour painting as a preparatory study for his oil painting A Cow Lying Down (c. 1893), that is part of the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum, inv. no. KM 100.970.
