William Aiken Walker (American, 1838-1921) Wash Day at the Cabin Signed "WAWalker" l.l. Oil on board, 9 1/4 x 12 in. (23.5 x 30.5 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch. N.B. Born in Charlestown, Walker was the son of a cotton agent. He began to paint at a young age and was largely self-taught, although he studied briefly in Dusseldorf. He served in the Confederate Army, and after he was injured in battle he returned to his career as an artist. Walker traveled throughout the South and spent the majority of his time in Baltimore, New Orleans, and his native Charlestown.
