William Bradford 1823-1892 Schooner Yacht 'Bessie' Off Newport, circa 1855 1823-1892 Schooner Yacht 'Bessie' Off Newport, circa 1855 Signed Wm Bradford and with remnants of another signature Wm Br... and date 18... (lr) [recto]; numbered 5302 and inscribed Volente [verso] Pen and ink and gray wash on cream wove paper 12 x 18 3/8 inches Literature: Alan Granby, A Yachtsman's Eye: The Glen S. Foster Collection of Marine Paintings, Philadelphia, 2004, pl. III.I5, ill. p. 177 In the mid 1850s William Bradford made several sketching excursions to Newport with his teacher Albert Van Beest. According to Richard C. Kugler, former Director of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, "The identification of the schooner yacht in this wash drawing as the Bessie is based on William Bradford's notation on a large, undated pencil study of vessels and small craft in the Hart Nautical Collections at the M.I.T. Museum." Estate of Glen S. Foster
Lightly toned with some discoloration along the top edge and in the upper left area of the sky and in center. Taped to mat with two pieces of archival tape along top verso edge.
