Beschreibung:

William Lutley Sclater (1829-1913) and Osbert Salvin (1835-1898) Exotic Ornithology, containing figures and descriptions of new or rare species of American birds. London: Bernard Quaritch, [1866]-1869. 2 volumes, 4° (523 x 358mm). 100 hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after J. Smit, printed by M. and N. Hanhart, of which 16 are tipped-in plates of smaller size, plates and text leaves both mounted on guards, wood-engraved illustrations. (Some light soiling, plates 6 and 7 in vol. I with glue marks at inner margin.) Modern crimson half morocco gilt, top edges gilt, original wrappers bound in at the beginning of each volume. Provenance : J.F. Symons-Jeune (bookplate) A LARGE PAPER COPY of this outstanding work, issued in 13 parts October 1866-November 1869. As the preface states, it was originally intended to cover 'the many new and rare ornithic forms that have been recently discovered in nearly every part of the world's surface. As it progressed, however, the authors found that it would be more convenient to restrict it to the birds of the Neotropical Region - that is to restrict it to the birds of the United States. No other part of the world can vie with Tropical America in the richness of its avifuna; and nowhere else have so many brilliant discoveries been recently made...' Anker 450; Fine Bird Books p.106; Nissen IVB 884; Wood p.558; Zimmer p.560.
