Portrait of Euphemia Boswell, in a blue dress.
Oil on canvas. 33 1/4 x 27 1/2 inches (84.5 x 70 cm). Signed and dated "1742" (lower right). Inscribed on reverse "Miss Eupham Erskine Daughter to Coll. Erskine/ son to Sir Chas. Erskine of Alva/ Spouse of Alexander Boswell Lorn of Auchinleck." Provenance: Neal Auction Company, 2 August 2003, lot 234. A portrait of Euphemia Erskine, mother of James Boswell William Bosman was a prominent Scottish painter, studying briefly in London in 1727 under William Aikman From 1732-38 he was in Rome learning to paint in the fashionable portrait style akin to Allan Ramsay By the 1750’s he had settled back to Aberdeen, where he ran a drawing school. Euphemia Erskine (1718-1766) married Alexander Boswell in 1738, she was affectionately described as pious, dutiful and loving. Exhibited: Boswell Exhibition, 1967, number 3.
