DescriptionWilliam Pitt, the Younger
Series of 12 autograph letters signed, as Prime Minister, to William Eden Lord Auckland,
offering him the ambassadorship to Paris, discussing a commercial treaty with France ("...I believe it will appear [...] 1st that the Balance of Trade is likely to be ultimately very much in our Favor, and 2ndly that the encreased Revenue which We shall draw from the Encreased Importations will bear a much larger Proportion to the Value of the Articles than the Encrease of their Revenues will to the Value of our encreased Exports...", 21 April 1786), and with later letters giving news of war in Europe ("...I grieve at the Accounts from Naples (even allowing for French Exaggeration) and cannot think of Austria with Patience..."), c.33 pages, 4to and 8vo, 1786-90s, damp damage[with:] typed transcriptions of all letters
William Eden (1745-1814) was a diplomat who served as Ambassador to France from 1785-87, amongst other postings. He was elevated to the peerage in 1789 and retired in 1793 to his country seat at Beckenham. This was close to Pitt's home at Holwood, and the two men were close friends. There were even rumours of an engagement between Pitt and Eden's eldest daughter, Eleanor, but in 1797 the Prime Minister made clear that he had no intention of making a proposal. She went on to marry the Earl of Buckinghamshire (for letters to Eleanor from her younger sister Emily see lot 187).Condition reportCondition is described in the main body of the cataloguing, where appropriate
