CLEAN, UNCUT COPY of the second edition, the first to include the Jesuit Stefano Raffei's seven essays on ancient sculpture in the collection of Cardinal Albani and elsewhere. Winckelmann regarded this work, originally published in the spring of 1767, as the culmination of his scholarly career. He was murdered in mysterious circumstances about a year later, and by 1821 (according to the publisher's prefatory note) his book had become both difficult to obtain and expensive. Contrary to Winckelmann, Raffei provides dimensions, and comments on materials and state of preservation. He establishes whether an object has been restored and notes whenever the representation is misleading (see Tracing Architecture p. 26). Vinet 1452. (3)
