WISDEN – Cricketers' Almanack for 1905 [-1909], edited by Sydney H. Pardon. London: John Wisden and Co., 1905 [-1909]. Tenth to fourteenth hardback editions, being 42nd-46th in the series. An interesting selection of Wisdens, with the 1905 edition featuring an unusual piece on ‘Record Bats’ (pp. xxx-xxxi). This lists ‘Bats, Prices and Buyers’ in an auction sale for the Cricketers’ Benevolent Fund. Bats owned by W.G. Grace, Trumper, Ranji, Jessop and Shrewsbury make the largest sums. In the 1906 season, Tom Hayward scores 3,518, a record that stands for 41 years. In 1907 A.E. Trott takes four wickets in four balls for Middlesex v Somerset in his benefit match at Lord’s, followed by a hat-trick later in the innings. W.G. Grace plays his final first-class match in 1908. In 1909 C. Blythe takes 215 wickets in the season, Wilfred Rhodes scores 2,094 runs and takes 141 wickets, while the visiting Australians under Monty Noble retain the Ashes. 5 volumes, octavo (161 x 100mm), all bound in original publisher's hardback cloth gilt, original printed yellow wrappers used as endpapers. 1905: photographic plate (occasional minor scattered spotting, adhesion affecting one image in ad. at front, hinges weak with rear free endpaper loosening, extremities rubbed, moreso at foot of spine); 1906: photographic plate (plate faintly oxidised, but otherwise internally a clean copy, extremities lightly rubbed); 1907: photographic plate (internally a clean copy, extremities faintly rubbed); 1908: photographic plate (plate almost loose and with one corner lightly creased, lower corners of final few gatherings lightly creased, otherwise a clean copy, extremities lightly rubbed, lower corners faintly bumped); 1909: photographic plate (small marginal spot to leaves adjacent to plate but not affecting plate or mount itself, cloth covers lightly bowed, corners bumped). Please note this lot is the property of a private individual.
