(20 5/8 x 14 1/8in.), eighteenth-century panelled calf, rebacked with old backstrip laid down, corners restored, covers abraded with some leather loss, plate I shaved past plate mark at left and with some slight abrasions, the additional plate at front cropped past lower plate mark, some browning and spotting throughout; unboxed . FIRST EDITION (an edition in French was published the same year), 57 numbered plates on 59 sheets including the three-sheet panoramic plate I, by P. Foudrinier, J.S. and T.M. Müller and T. Major after Giovanni Battista Borra, 3 full-page engravings of inscriptions; additional double-page engraving of the authors "first discovering sight of Palmyra", by Hall after Hamilton, 1773, on a guard at front.
