WORLD COINS - INDIA - SILVER PUNCH-MARKED SATAMANA GROUP [6] Circa 500 BC Obvs: impressed with multiple stamps of taxila and floral symbols. Revs: blank. 61.56 grams total (range 9.83-10.65 grams each, 38.47-42.98mm). As struck; toned. [6, No Reserve] Provenance Ex Walter Steinberg collection; with envelope. Literature See MACW 4079 for type. Footnotes The satamana, from northern India, is one of the oldest world currencies, valued at 100 rattis of silver by weight; the rattis being the weight of seeds (in the same way as cereal grains in Europe were used as a weight standard at a later period); the currency was near contemporary with the earliest electrum punch-marked Greek slug coins of Lydia.
