An archive relating to the Bronner family of Vienna (brothers Josef, Max, Marzell and sister Auguste) during the Nazi period in World War II, comprising 84 letters and documents and 15 photographs, various dates, 1896-1948, most documenting Josef's family, life prior to the Nazi Anschluss, study as an engineer at the Technische Hochschule, the brothers' arrest as Jews in Spring 1938, deportation to Dachau and Buchenwald, eventual release on payment of a bribe and later emigration. Includes WW I military papers; medical statements; authenticated reports; notary documents, many with original stamps and seal; resumes; emigration papers; certification for military authorities that Josef Bronner is "Volljude" (pure Jewish) but that the military authorities have no reservations regarding an emigration (Vienna, 1938); notary document confirming Josef Bronner's signature, stating that he is "in Buchenwald near Weimar by his own desire" (Weimar, 17 Nov. 1938); U.K. naturalization document (24 Feb. 1948), TLS from Helene Dukas, Secretary of Albert Einstein, to Auguste Bronner (20 October 1942); supporting letters on House of Commons stationary and other papers, many in German. Auguste was successful in purchasing her brothers' release from the concentration camp on Dec. 17 1938, upon payment of $ 10,000 to Gauleiter J. Buerckel. A witness, Maria Wuensch, states: "As this meant a matter of life and death to her brothers - in the true sense of the word - Miss Auguste Bronner produced this amount, after desperate efforts, and personally handed this sum over to Brueckel"
