On 17 December 1920 the League of Nations conferred a Mandate of Administration of the territory on His Britannic Majesty, to be carried out by the government in South Africa. The Mandate came into force on 1 January 1923, on which date the first South African stamps overprinted for use in the territory were issued The Forerunner Period Although overprinted stamps were available from 1 January 1923 in South West Africa, those not overprinted were still valid for postage until 31 January 1923 1923 (20 Feb.) envelope from Gobabis to Windhoek, bearing ½d. and 1½d. sharing light datestamp, not accepted for postage at Gobabis and with tax handstamp deleted in blue crayon and covered by overprinted 2d. purple cancelled by similar datestamp. A rare non-acceptance of South Africa values after the invalidation date. Photo
