(x) South West Africa Stamps of South Africa Used in South West Africa These were available up to 31 January 1923 when they ceased to be valid. On 17 December 1920 the League of Nations conferred a Mandate of Administration of the territory on His Britannic Majesty, to be carried out by the government in South Africa. The Mandate came into force on 1 January 1923, on which date the first South African stamps overprinted for use in the territory were issued The Forerunner Period Although overprinted stamps were available from 1 January 1923 in South West Africa, those not overprinted were still valid for postage until 31 January 1923 1923 (20 Feb.) envelope from Gobabis to Windhoek, bearing ½d. and 1½d. sharing light datestamp, not accepted for postage at Gobabis and with tax handstamp deleted in blue crayon and covered by overprinted 2d. purple cancelled by similar datestamp. A rare non-acceptance of South Africa values after the invalidation date. Photo
