Y A PAIR OF NAPOLEON III SCARLET TORTOISESHELL & BRASS MARQUETRY CARD TABLES IN THE MANER OF ANDRÉ-CHARLES BOULLE THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY One table premiere-partie marquetry, the other contre-partie, each with a rotating hinged top enclosing a green baize inset surface with an ebony and brass marquetry border 79cm high, 90cm wide, 45cm deep Provenance: Property from the Kingshott Collection For a related pair of card tables with ebonised legs see Christie's London, Style & Spirit, 16th September 2014, lot 336 (£8,750) Condition Report: There are some marks, scratches, knocks, chips, splits and abrasions consistent with age and use. There are losses and restorations including some areas of loss of the red stained tortoiseshell and repaired with variable red filler which under close inspection has a different finish and colour in some cases; some later brass pins to some of the brass marquetry in particular to the front right frieze and leg brass of the premier partie table ; some chips to the tortoiseshell; some craquelure to the ebonised border to the inside of the table, with some traces of red paint presumably from repairs; the baize is later. All sides of frieze of the card table have boulle marquetry, the front and back both designed and set identically with a gilt metal mask.
