Lot details By Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810-1875), signed Mitsuhiro 光廣 with seal Ohara 大原 Japan, Osaka, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved in a naturalistic manner, preserving the curvature of the tusk, the ivory beautifully stained, with a central himotoshi beside the signature MITSUHIRO above the seal OHARA. The Japanese word for a node of bamboo is setsu, which also means ‘fidelity’, a pun which was often employed in netsuke art. HEIGHT 5.1 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, expected age cracks, the front with a fine honey-gold patina. Provenance: Sydney L. Moss Ltd, no. 5698 (according to label to reverse). Literature comparison: Compare a closely related netsuke depicting the same subject by Mitsuhiro, illustrated in Davey, Neil K. (1974) Netsuke: A comprehensive study based on the M.T. Hindson Collection, p. 43, no. 89. Trade Certificate: In accordance with new EU regulations that went into effect in January 2022, we have applied for a certificate to sell this item within the EU. We expect the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology to issue the certificate in 4-8 weeks. The item can only be shipped / handed over once the certificate has been issued.
