YEAR BOOKS. A collection of 51 law reports in 6 volumes from Anno 17 Edward III to Anno 27 Henry VIII. London: Richard Tottell, 1555-83. 2° (283 x 178 to 311 x 196mm.) A few works with woodcut title-borders, black letter. (Year 3 of Edward IV lacks 8 leaves, some volumes somewhat browned, a few other minor defects). Volumes I-III and VI late 16th or early 17th-century blindstamped calf (vol. VI not uniform), the others 19th-century roan (vols I-III and VI rebacked), Provenance : Volumes II, III and V with numerous contemporary and early 16th-century annotations; Ciprianus Lucar (interesting purchase inscription (10s. 6d.), and dated 6 February 1570, at end of volume II); Tho. Leaver (17th-century signature in vol. VI). Despite many gaps, this is a remarkably comprehensive collection of law reports spanning some two hundred years, important not only for the legal information that they impart but also for the glimpses shown of every-day life in the late Middle Ages. Ciprian Lucar (fl.1570-90), described by the DNB as a mechanician and author, translated Tartaglia's treatise on artillery into English and was the author of A Treatise named Lucarsolace , an interesting work dealing with geometry, mensuration, wells, chimneys and various pieces of machinery including a prototype fire-engine. STC 9557, 9560, 9564, 9567, 9572, 9575, 9578, 9581, 9608, 9615, 9623, 9630, 9636, 9641, 9647, 9655, 9662, 9668, 9672, 9679, 9684, 9688.5, 9695, 9788, 9794, 9801, 9803, 9811, 9817, 9824, 9830, 9835, 9843, 9849, 9854, 9858, 9864, 9869, 9875, 9880, 9887, 9893, 9896.5, 9906.7, 9914, 9923.5, 9936.5, 9946.5, 9947.7, 9956 & 9963.7. The lot sold as a collection, not subject to return. (6)
