Born in 1914 in the Lot-et-Garonne, Yoland Cazenove showed a talent for drawing from an early age. In 1937, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, while working as a farmer inherited from his parents. It was in 1947 that ceramics became his passion and only activity. Self-taught, his path is strewn with attempts but his meeting in 1950 with Francine Del Pierre, Diato, and Duncan is decisive. He then began to use the flat coil to make his very fine pieces, with walls almost like eggshells despite their raw stoneware appearance, such as the piece we are presenting here. He exhibited from 1953 at the Beaugency museum and in Lyon and took part in the Faenza competition before being presented to the public in Paris. His research then concentrated on engobes, sometimes using Indian ink. Indeed, with a wide culture, his inspirations are multiple, from Hispano-Moorish chandeliers to pre-Columbian ceramics. He was fascinated by Far Eastern ceramics and so he adopted the raku technique for which he built his own tunnel kiln. His production was considerable, and Yoland Cazenove died in 2009 at the age of 95.
