ZAP COMIX No. 1 [1st Printing, CHARLES PLYMELL'S COPY, Signed and with Provenance] Author: Place: Publisher: Apex Novelties Date: November, 1967 Description: CGC certified: Good/VG (3.0). Off-white pages. Robert Crumb story, cover and art. Charles Plymell edition. First printing with correct issue points as noted in Jay Kennedy's Official Underground and Newave Comix Price Guide [Cambridge: 1982]: "Has a $.25 cover price and says 'Printed by Charles Plymell' on the back cover." The back cover is neatly and discreetly signed "Charles Plymell" next to the printed words "Charles Plymell". With provenance documents and photo. An historic copy of the most important underground mag of all time (Comics historian Robert Beerbohm considers Zap #1 to be "the 4th most important comic book ever published in America"). With a handwritten provenance statement by Charles Plymell, the poet, novelist and small press publisher who first printed Zap Comix #1 in an edition, he says, of 1500 copies. True to his Bohemian roots, Mr. Plymell jotted his statement on the back of a plain brown mailer: "This is one of the first batch to come out of the chute on pre-war 1250 MULTILITH. We then took them to Robert's apt. to gather + staple them. [Signed] Charles Plymell [Dated] 2/19/2019." Also included is an 8" x 10" black and white photo of Mr. Plymell taken by photographer Phil Scalia (signed by Scalia on the recto and by Plymell on the verso), and a certificate of authenticity from publisher and bookseller Water Row Books: "To Whom It May Concern: This is to certify that the accompanying copy of ZAP Comix #1 "Printed by Charles Plymell" was purchased directly from Charles Plymell and was his personal copy. It was signed on the back cover by Charles Plymell". The certificate is signed by Plymell and Jeffrey H. Weinberg of Water Row Books (Water Row published Crumb-Ology: The Works of R. Crumb, 1981-1994, and other Crumb-related books). CGC census: Seven copies of the Plymell printing are graded 3.0. Comparable CGC sales: No other copies with both Plymell signature and ownership provenance have been sold. A copy graded 4.5 and signed by both Crumb and Plymell was sold for $3107 in October, 2015. More recently, an unsigned 2.5 copy was sold for $1495 (Nov., 2019). Consignments Accepted for PBA's Next Comic Book Auction. Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Code, Original Art, Interesting Ephemera Sought. Contact ivan@pbagalleries.com for details. March 26th Comic Book Sale catalogues available. Supplies Limited.
