Mountain Dwellings
ZHANG DAQIAN (1899-1983) Mountain Dwellings Scroll, mounted on woodboard and framed, ink and colour on paper 93.5 x 48.3 cm. (36 ¾ x 19 in.) Inscribed and signed, with three seals of the artist Dated autumn, sixty-seventh year (of the Republic, 1978) PROVENANCE: Purchased from Zhang Daqian’s studio in Taiwan and has remained with the current owner since 1983. NOTE: The present owner was a former international banker and held assignments in Asia from 1974 to 1985. In 1983, after nearly six years in Taipei, he was reassigned to the bank’s Hong Kong regional headquarters. The Taipei branch bank, its officers and staff presented him with a farewell gift of a work by Zhang, which remained in his possession for the past 33 years. According to the present owner, the purchase of the painting was arranged by a senior member of the Taipei branch staff from the artist’s studio.
