Zweig, Stefan AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT WORKING DRAFT OF THE OPENING OF 'DAS ERSTE WORT ÜBER DEN OZEAN' FROM DIE STERNSTUNDEN DER MENSCHHEIT, DIVERGING CONSIDERABLY FROM THE FINAL PUBLISHED TEXT written in blue ink, numerous autograph corrections, cancellations and additions, 1 page, 4to, no place or date [between 1927 and 1942?] Alle die tausende und vielleicht hunderttausende von Jahren, seit der Mensch die Erde beschreitet, hatte die Menschheit kein anderes Mass irdischer Geschwindigkeit, als den Lauf des Pferdes, das rollende Rad, das rudernde oder das segelnde Schiff... together with: autograph working notes for an unidentifed work or works, possibly his last, unfinished, work on Montaigne, 2 pages, 4to, no place or date, some spotting and creasing; two early autograph letters signed ("Stefan Zweig"): one to "Herr Sergel" [Alfred Sergel, German writer, 1876-1946?], apparently originally accompanying the sending of Zweig's first volume of poems, Silberne Saiten, informing him of his recently completed doctorate and forthcoming book of short stories [Die Liebe der Erika Ewald] and telling him of his plans to travel and see the world ("...bin jetzt gerade am Sprunge in die Welt zu reisen..."), 1 page, 8vo, annotated apparently by the recipient [Vienna, 16 July 1904?]; the other to an unidentified "Herr Doktor", observing that between him and Dickens stands the shadow of Dostoevsky, 1 page, 8vo, Vienna, Kochgasse, no date; a letter fragment, apparently in Zweig's hand, concerning an unidentified correspondent's novel, 1 page, 4to, no place or date; and a one-leaf document bearing a list of names beginning with the letter 'F' in the hand of Lotte Zweig, Zweig's second wife and secretary.
