Diane Arbus wurde am 14. März 1923 als Tochter des Ehepaars David und Gertrude Nemerov in New York City geboren. Sie besuchte zunächst die Private School of the Claverack und dann die Fieldston School in Riverdale. 1941 nahm sie schließlich an einem Fotografiekurs teil, den ihr Vater in ihrem Namen bezahlte. Mit einer Kamera ausgestattet, die ihr Vater ihr geschenkt hatte, begann sie, die Straßen von New York City zu erkunden und begann, Bilder zu machen. 1941 heiratete Arbus ihren Schulkameraden Allan Arbus. Bis 1957 arbeiteten die beiden gemeinsam als Mode- und Werbefotografen. Im Jahr 1956 schließlich begann Arbus, sich auf ihre eigene Fotografie zu konzentrieren. Ihre erste Ausstellung in einer Galerie fand 1958 in der New Yorker Art Gallery statt. Im selben Jahr erschien ihr erstes Buch "Aperture". Es folgten weitere Ausstellungen und Publikationen, darunter auch ein Buch mit dem Titel "Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph". In den Folgejahren arbeitete Arbus an einer Vielzahl von Projekten. Eines ihrer bekanntesten Projekte war ihre Serie "Arivistes et Inadaptes" (1966-1971), in der sie sich auf die Menschen konzentrierte, die in New York City auf der Straße lebten. 1972 starb Arbus an einer Überdosis Schlaftabletten. Ihre letzte Ausstellung fand posthum 1975 statt. Seitdem wurden zahlreiche Retrospektiven, Ausstellungen und Bücher anlässlich ihres Werkes herausgebracht. Ihr Werk hat viele Künstler inspiriert und sie gilt als eine der einflussreichsten Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts.
