Glenn Ligon wurde am 26. Februar 1960 in der Stadt Bronx, New York City, geboren. Er wuchs in einer gemischtrassigen Familie in Harlem auf. Ligon begann seine künstlerische Karriere 1981 an der Rhode Island School of Design, wo er einen Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) erhielt. 1983 ging er an die Columbia University, wo er einen Master of Fine Arts (MFA) erhielt. Ligons erste Einzelausstellung fand 1992 im New Yorker Whitney Museum of American Art statt. Es folgten 1996 und 2000 weitere Ausstellungen im Whitney, sowie Einzelausstellungen in vielen anderen Museen und Institutionen, u.a. im Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, im Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, im Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago und im Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Ligons Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Gruppenausstellungen weltweit präsentiert, darunter im Museum of Modern Art, im Metropolitan Museum of Art und im Tate Modern in London. Ligon hat zwei Bücher veröffentlicht, darunter „Glenn Ligon: A Reader“ (2005) und „Glenn Ligon: America“ (2011). Seine Arbeiten wurden auch in vielen Magazine und Publikationen vorgestellt, u.a. in „Arts Magazine“ (1994), „The New York Times“ (1996), „Artforum“ (1998) und „The New Yorker“ (2003). Ligon erhielt viele Auszeichnungen und Stipendien, darunter den MacArthur Fellowship (2009), den Guggenheim Fellowship (2002) und den American Academy of Arts and Letters Award (2007). Ligons Werke befinden sich in bedeutenden Sammlungen, darunter im Museum of Modern Art, im Whitney Museum of American Art, im Metropolitan Museum of Art, im Studio Museum in Harlem und im Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Ligon lebt und arbeitet heute in Brooklyn, New York.
