Thomas Moran wurde am 12. Februar 1837 in Bolton, Lancashire, England, geboren. Er war der älteste Sohn des Farbhändler Edward Moran und seiner Frau Mary. Thomas hatte vier Brüder und drei Schwestern. Im Alter von zehn Jahren zogen die Morans nach Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thomas Moran zeigte schon früh ein Talent für die Kunst. Sein Vater erkannte sein Talent und unterstützte ihn, indem er ihm Zugang zu Kunstgalerien und eine Ausbildung zum Kunsthandwerker ermöglichte. Mit 16 Jahren begann Thomas eine Lehre bei dem Maler William Hart und erlernte die Maltechniken des 19. Jahrhunderts. 1857 ging Thomas nach London, um an der Royal Academy of Arts zu studieren. Er studierte unter anderem mit John Everett Millais und William Holman Hunt. Seine Arbeiten wurden bei der Royal Academy of Arts ausgestellt und waren bei den Kritikern sehr beliebt. Moran kehrte 1866 in die USA zurück und wurde Mitglied der National Academy of Design. Er begann in New York zu lehren und entwickelte sich zu einem renommierten Maler. Seine Lehrtätigkeit brachte ihm viele Einflüsse und Ideen ein, die sich in seinem Werk widerspiegeln. 1871 nahm Thomas Moran an der Hayden-Expedition nach Yellowstone teil, um die wunderschöne Landschaft zu malen. Diese Reise hatte einen großen Einfluss auf seine Arbeit und brachte ihm viel Anerkennung. Sein Gemälde "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone", das er 1872 malte, wurde zur Eröffnung des Yellowstone National Park ausgestellt und trug maßgeblich zur Anerkennung des Parks bei. Thomas Moran war an verschiedenen Ausstellungen beteiligt, darunter die World's Columbian Exposition 1893 und die Brooklyn Art Association. Seine Arbeiten wurden weltweit ausgestellt, und er wurde für seine Landschaftsbilder mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Thomas Moran starb am 26. August 1926 in Santa Barbara, Kalifornien, im Alter von 89 Jahren. Sein Werk ist ein einzigartiger Beitrag zum amerikanischen Impressionismus und wird weltweit geschätzt. Sein Name wird auch heute noch in Galerien, Museen und Kunstmessen verewigt.
