Wolfgang Tillmans wurde am 16. August 1968 in Remscheid, Deutschland, als Sohn eines Lehrers und einer Künstlerin geboren. Er besuchte das Lyceum Alpinum in Zuoz, Schweiz, und absolvierte dann das Abitur am Warrington College of Technology in England. Er begann seine künstlerische Karriere im Jahr 1989, als er mit dem Verleihen eines Preises an der renommierten Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles, Frankreich, begann. Sein Fotografiestil wurde schnell als innovativ und originell angesehen. Im Jahr 1990 hatte Tillmans seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Tanya Bonakdar in New York City. Seine Werke wurden in wichtigen Museen wie dem Museum of Modern Art in New York, dem Pompidou Centre in Paris und dem Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York ausgestellt. Im Jahr 2000 wurde Tillmans als erster Fotograf mit dem Turner-Preis ausgezeichnet. Tillmans hat sich auch als Musikproduzent versucht und hat ein Album namens 'Speaker' veröffentlicht. 2001 gründete er das Label 'Fragile' und veröffentlichte einige EPs und Alben. Tillmans hat auch eine Reihe von Videos und Filmen produziert, darunter 'Truth Study Center' (2007), 'Empire' (2008) und 'If One Thing Matters, Everything Matters' (2011). Tillmans wurde mehrmals für sein Engagement für die Menschenrechte und den Umweltschutz ausgezeichnet. Er ist auch äußerst aktiv als Förderer von Kunst und Kultur und hat sich insbesondere für die Förderung des kreativen Schaffens von jungen Künstlern eingesetzt.
