Paul Evans (1931-1987) for Paul Evans Studio Deep Relief Cabinet, United States, 1969, welded, patinated, and polychromed steel, cleft slate, laminated wood, one adjustable shelf per side, drawer left side facing, welded signature under the first door on the left facing "Paul Evans 69," marked "E 42A" on back, ht. 32, wd. 96, dp. 22 in. Provenance: Acquired new by the consignor from Rapids Furniture Company, Boston, Massachusetts. Note: Evans was an American furniture designer and sculptor known for his unique tables and cabinets. Born in 1920, Evans studied at the Philadelphia Textile Institute, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. After school, Evans shared a workshop and showroom with his mentor, Phillip Lloyd Powell in New Hope, Pennsylvania. In 1964, Evans became a designer for Directional Furniture, and introduced several furniture lines, including his popular "Cityscapes" series. At Directional, Evans became one of the few designer-makers to successfully bridge the gap between studio and commercial furniture production. In 1981, Evans left Directional Furniture and opened his own showroom in New York.
