An albumen photograph, 8 x 10 in., mounted, framed to 9.25 x 11.25 in., of the 17th Maine with officer identifications in the negative. The officers are spaced apart in the foreground, the enlisted men stand closely together in the background, and the regimental band stands to the left. Dated May 3, 1864, the photograph shows the regiment just before they joined the Battle of the Wilderness, where 26 of the men would lose their lives in addition to 141 wounded, missing, or taken prisoner. Mounted to 8 x 10 in., framed to 9.25 x 11.25, and accompanied by printed history from the Civil War Database. The Battle of the Wilderness was just one of many bloody battles endured by the 17th Maine. Mustered into service at Camp King in Cape Elizabeth on Aug. 18, 1862, the regiment was sent to Washington for drilling and garrison duty, and was commended for coolness after experiencing its first live action at Fredericksburg in December. After an uneventful winter at Falmouth, Virginia, they took part in the Chancellorsville campaign in early May, losing 113 men killed, wounded and missing out of a force of only 625, and suffered similar losses at Gettysburg, losing 132. The Battle of Orange Grove was their only serious engagement of the remainder of 1863, but that too was costly, and 1864 held the heavy losses at Wilderness, as well as engagements at Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Brevet Brigadier General Charles P. Mattocks was awarded the Medal of Honor for valor at Sailor's Creek in April 1865, the unit's last significant action before mustering out in Washington on June 4. The 17th Maine saw considerable action in some of the most important battles of the war, and suffered an aggregate loss of 745 of 2020 men in service, many of whom were injured multiple times.
