To Company Secretary Guy R. Phelps, Hartford, Conn. : “Please give me the additional rate upon the life of an individual going to and residing in California. I have several enquiries on this subject and expect to have many more so long as the excitement respecting the Gold region continues…”. An early “gold fever” letter, written two weeks after President Polk officially confirmed the discovery of gold in California.
