(A Middle Eastern Journey | Live Online, 2nd December 2020) λ TWO MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID CRUCIFIXES Jerusalem, mid-18th century and later λ TWO MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID CRUCIFIXES Jerusalem, mid-18th century and later Each of typical shape, three arms of the cross in the patonce style, the fourth prolonged, clad in mother-of-pearl tesserae, engraved with the icon of Christ on the Cross in the centre, above him the Titulus Crucis (INRI - Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum) on each cross, the allegory of Justice engraved on the fourth arm of the cross, each mounted on a velvet board and framed, one glazed and inlaid with four red carnelian beads, each cross ca. 29.3cm x 16.3cm. A similar crucifix, dating to the mid-18th century and encrusted with carnelian beads, is part of the Hermitage collection, St. Petersburg (inv. no. ERRe-6329). This item may require Export or CITES licences in order to leave the UK or the European Union.
