While, inevitably, it is George Brough’s more expensive and exotic models that have captured the motorcycling public’s imagination - in particular the high performance SS100 - the fact that the Nottingham manufacturer also produced a range of smaller, cheaper models is often overlooked. The smallest of these was the ohv 500, which, although considerably cheaper than the SS100 and SS80, cost 100 guineas, a price equivalent to that of many a contemporary light car. In 1927 Brough introduced ‘The SS80’s Younger Brother’, a tourer powered by a 750cc sidevalve JAP engine, while slightly below it in the range was the sidevalve version of the ohv 680, a model also known as the ‘5/15’ or ‘Brough Superior Junior’. This Lot consists of a JAP sidevalve engine having Brough Superior 5/15 crankcases, together with a complete set of frame lugs (obtained from Australia) enabling the purchaser to manufacture a replica frame. Also included in the sale is a replica fuel tank, hand made in Pendine style by K T Fabrications at a cost of £2,500; a rebuilt, re-plated and re-enamelled set of racing Brampton forks to suit; two Sturmey Archer four-stud gearboxes and a quantity of other parts. All in all, a most exciting project for the dedicated Brough Superior enthusiast.
