1930-31 BABE RUTH CONTRACT WITH NEW YORK YANKEES In 1930 the New York Yankees signed their star, Babe Ruth, to a two year contract for the unprecedented sum of $80,000 per season. When asked by reporters whether he thought it was right that he earn more than the President of the United States, Ruth replied, "I had a better year." This contract represents the highest salary ever paid by a team to a professional athlete prior to World War II and was the highest salary ever earned by Ruth. Even great stars such as Lou Gehrig earned less than $40,000 during the same period. The contract is dated March 10, 1930 and is signed on the second page by Jacob Ruppert, president of the Yankees, and George Herman Ruth. This contract is the most important contract ever signed by the greatest baseball personality of all time.
